What We're All AboutWelcome to BabyFaceDolls.com, All About Collecting Galoob Baby Face Dolls, the online resource for Galoob Baby Face doll collectors, formerly known as Francine's Galoob Baby Face Doll Page and the very first website ever about Baby Face dolls.
When I first started collecting Baby Face dolls, I could find very little information written about them anywhere. I wanted to know more about the dolls who had captured my heart and I was determined to try and find out everything there was to know about Baby Face. I began collecting Baby Face Facts, by talking to other collectors and by seeking out and interviewing people who were at Kiscom and Lewis Galoob Toys, at the time that the Baby Face dolls were made and who were directly involved in the creation of the Baby Face line. Several years went by and Baby Face collecting started becoming increasingly more popular year by year. My own collection continued to grow and I met more and more fellow collectors. One day a group of new collectors that I met online, complained that there were no books about Baby Face doll collecting. They asked me if I would write a Baby Face Handbook for them. Although growing, we Baby Face Fanciers are still a relatively small group, so I decided that a website would be a better idea. This website is a result of a wonderful collaboration between myself and many fellow collectors who contributed their knowledge and photographs to make this website possible.
It is ever growing and evolving and I hope that collectors, both new and old, will find this website useful and will not only enjoy, but participate in this group effort. There are color pictures of the dolls, accessories, related merchandise and many rare and one of a kind items that you will not find anywhere else or otherwise be able to see, from my collection, from the collections of many other generous Baby Face collectors and even some contributions from Mel Birnkrant himself. All photos, graphics and information are copyright and cannot be used for any commercial purpose or on any other website without prior written consent. Everything on this site is freely distributed and available for download and reference for all collectors for their personal use. That's what we're here for! We also will be happy to answer questions and love to hear feedback from you.
History of Baby Face
The creator of the Baby Face line is Mel Birnkrant, who has a legendary collection of early Disney and cartoon toys and has been famous in the toy industry for many years, as a leading designer. In 1990, in partnership with Kiscom Toys, he licensed his Baby Face doll designs to the Lewis Galoob Toy Company. Judy Albert, of Cabbage Patch fame, created the adorable outfits worn by the dolls. Starting with nine original designs, they eventually produced 36 different styles of dolls, from 19 molds over the next few years. Here you can learn about the inside story of how Baby Face dolls were made, a description of the manufacturing process. In addition to the dolls, there were extra outfits sold separately and various accessories and related licensed merchandise produced, all pictured here for you. After two very successful years, Galoob arbitrarily and abruptly decided to discontinue the line, even though they were one of the most popular dolls on the market at that time. That's the short version. Read all about the birth of Baby Face, in the words of their creator, Mel Birnkrant and get the artist's perspective of how he conceptualized and then made the dolls a reality and what came after.
About the Dolls
Baby face dolls are made of high quality vinyl, they are jointed at the neck shoulders, elbows, hips and knees and are a true strung doll. They are about 13" tall and can stand and pose in many appealing ways. In the last production year Bathtub Baby Face were introduced. Although originally designed to be fully jointed like their big sisters, they have no joints at the elbows or knees and cannot stand on their own. They can pose in the sitting or laying down positions only. They have a heat sensitive tee shirt printed on that disappears when the doll is placed in a tub of warm water. All the Baby Face have rooted hair of various colors (mostly blondes) and open acrylic eyes with applied lashes. Each doll came with a Magic Heart Charm bracelet accessory, which had a secret message that was revealed when rubbed between the fingers. There were ten Black dolls, two Asian and two Hispanic styles. In addition, there were also Baby Face dolls produced for the foreign or overseas market. We have examples of Canadian, Portugese, Finnish and Japanese Baby Face dolls here. In addition there were a few prototypes of proposed styles that were waiting in the wings when Galoob abruptly decided to discontinue the line and we have many examples of these also.
Identification
I have made a handy reference list Baby Face by the Numbers of all the Baby Face dolls that were produced, identified by mold #s (you can find the mold # on the back of the head). This will help you identify Baby Face dolls that you find not in their original boxes. Since "all Baby Face were not created equal" we have a Rarity Ranking Chart to help you figure out which dolls are harder to find. Found a loose Baby Face and are you are wondering if your baby is dressed in her original outfit? Refer to these pictures of the dolls. All thirty six dolls are now shown here dressed in their complete original outfits.
